You Just Can't Escape It

It’s happening. AP English is once again infiltrating my life. So I found a book lying around the house that I bought a few years ago called City of Bones and the final climatic scene occurs in a mental institution. I’ve come to accept the fact that I am drawing random parallels in my life to One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest quite often given that we just finished the book, but what are the odds that another, completely unrelated book, would again draw a parallel? Not to mention the fact that the day of Christmas through this morning I spent in the hospital because my Grandma was diagnosed with pneumonia. The entire time I was in the hospital I kept seeing connections to the novel, right down to the glass nurses station. Now, of course this wasn’t a mental institution and I am not afraid of a nurse Ratched appearing out of the darkness and causing mayhem, but still, it kind of freaks me out how much my life seems to connect to the book.

  1. Hayden, I too have experienced many connections to English this break. For one, the other night at dinner our conversation turned to sympathy and empathy, and ended in my explanation of the difference between the two. Also, it seems like of the five or so movies I have watched this break, at least three have a character with some sort of psychiatric illness. Overall, you really cannot escape English.

  2. Yeah, parallels like that always creep me out. I haven't had exact parallels like you have, although I do find myself analyzing peoples' faces to see if I can tell how they're feeling. The whole talk we had about Bromden's empathy has really been embedded into my mind, so I keep thinking about it, even during normal conversations. Yeah, as Hannah said, AP English isn't really something you can escape. Winter Break is no exception.

  3. Hayden, I too find may parallels between my very own life, and that of the characters in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest(sometimes, it concerns me a bit) I believe that these connections we draw are good for us, as it means we are deeply analyzing the text and putting alot of thought into it. Ultimatelty, these strange/suprising connections will probabably help us to better understand the true meaning of the text, and maybe even write a 9+ essay(I wish).
